Kinley has been my family’s favourite spot for over a decade. The Ema Datshi here is the closest thing to home cooking I’ve ever tasted at a restaurant. The chilli and yak cheese ratio is absolutely perfect, and the red rice is always cooked just right. The staff remember our names — that kind of warmth is rare.

Visited Thimphu for the first time and my guide brought me straight to Kinley. The chicken momos were phenomenal — light, juicy and full of flavour. But what really surprised me was the cocktail bar. The Kinley Special Cocktail is worth the trip alone. Sophisticated, unique and perfectly balanced. I came back three times in a week!

As a travel writer covering the Himalayas, I eat at dozens of restaurants each year. Kinley stands out not just for the food but for the entire experience. The Phaksha Paa (pork with dried chillies) was absolutely incredible — deeply smoky, intensely flavourful. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between cosy local gem and polished dining. We hosted our company annual dinner at Kinley and it was an absolute success. The team handled every detail flawlessly — from the custom menu to the seating arrangement. The grilled chicken and butter chicken were crowd favourites, and the dessert spread was lovely. Several colleagues said it was the best work event they’d attended. We will definitely return.

As a vegetarian, I was a little worried about options in Bhutan. Kinley completely exceeded my expectations. The Veg Spring Rolls were crispy perfection, the Paneer Tikka was beautifully spiced, and the Veg Pasta Primavera was genuinely delicious. Even the Ema Datshi without meat was a revelation. The staff were so accommodating with all my questions. Magnifique!

Every visit to Thimphu is incomplete without a meal at Kinley. I’ve been coming here since 2009 and the quality has only gotten better. The Jasha Maru is my must-order — the spiced minced chicken is so comforting, especially on cold winter evenings. Combined with a glass of Ara served warm, it’s a truly Bhutanese moment. The prices are also very fair.

Came here after a long hike and the food was exactly the soul-food comfort I needed. The Butter Chicken was rich, creamy and incredibly aromatic — served with the softest naan I have had in a long time. The warm atmosphere, friendly service and the gorgeous view of Thimphu in the evening made this an utterly perfect meal. Cannot wait to return.

Kinley is an absolute must-visit when in Thimphu. What impressed me most was how seamlessly they blend authentic Bhutanese flavours with international comfort food. I had the Crispy Calamari to start (perfectly fried) and then Shakam Datshi — the dried beef in cheese sauce was unlike anything I had tasted before. Brilliant flavour complexity. Outstanding value too.

We celebrated my grandmother’s 80th birthday here and Kinley made it truly magical. The staff went out of their way to surprise her with a beautiful dessert arrangement. The Gulab Jamun was perfectly soft and fragrant. The entire family agreed it was one of our most memorable meals together. We felt genuinely cared for as guests, not just customers. I studied in Thimphu for six months and Kinley became my home away from home. The Druk 11000 Beer is my favourite way to wind down after a long day, and the Buff Sukuti Salad is an explosion of flavour — spicy, tangy and deeply satisfying. The relaxed bar atmosphere in the evenings is wonderful. I genuinely miss this place every day since returning to Germany.

Visited on a work trip and had the most delightful solo dinner here. The Fish & Chips were surprisingly brilliant — the batter was light and crispy, the fish fresh. I also tried the Suja butter tea out of curiosity and was completely won over by its distinct, warming flavour. The interior is beautifully warm without feeling pretentious. Exactly what you want after a long day of meetings.

The best Ema Datshi in all of Thimphu, and I say this having tried dozens of restaurants. What sets Kinley apart is the freshness of the chillies and the quality of the cheese. Paired with their perfectly cooked red rice, it is a complete experience. The service is genuinely warm — you can tell the staff take real pride in what they serve. A true Bhutanese treasure.

My wife and I visited Bhutan for our anniversary and Kinley was the highlight of our culinary journey. We shared the Chicken Momos, Mutton Curry and a Chocolate Brownie with vanilla ice cream. Every dish was cooked with evident care. The ambiance is wonderfully intimate in the evenings — perfect for a romantic dinner. The staff even brought us a complimentary dessert to celebrate. We were deeply touched.

I came here specifically for the momos after reading about them online and I was not disappointed at all. The wrappers were thin and silky, the filling generously spiced. I also tried the Mocktail of the Day — a beautiful hibiscus and ginger creation — which was utterly refreshing. The presentation of every dish showed real attention to detail. Kinley is clearly a labour of love.

We are foodies who have eaten in over 40 countries and Kinley ranks among our most memorable meals. The fusion of Bhutanese tradition with global technique is done with remarkable finesse. We loved the Paneer Tikka, the Jasha Maru and — unexpectedly — the Fruit Salad with honey drizzle was the perfect refreshing end. The Kinley Special Cocktail is a brilliant creation. Absolutamente excelente!
